ESL Gambling Grammar Game

One of the best ways to help kids learn is to make the whole process into a game. This gambling grammar game will help ESL students by having them determine how accurate the grammar of a sentence is. They'll also be able to practice their numbers in English while placing bets on the grammar. Teachers can incorporate any type of grammar lesson into the game such as syntax, spelling, and tenses while simultaneously involving numbers to enhance skills involving mental math and English pronunciation of numbers.

Another helpful aspect of this game is that the necessary materials are few. You'll need a board to write on that everyone can see, some grammatically flawed sentences, sentences without errors, and paper and utensils for each group to write their wagers and answers.

The rules are fairly simple, but the teacher should take some time to explain them and show how the game works so that everyone knows how to play before proceeding.

Once everyone knows how to play, the teacher should break the class into teams of three. Each team should be equipped with a paper and pencil for writing their wagers and answers. It's also fun to allow each team to come up with their team names.

The teacher then creates a scoreboard on the big board with all the team names in columns along with each team's starting points or dollar amount. This number will represent how much play money is available to wager and also reflect which team is winning.

Once the board is set up and everyone knows how the game works, the teacher writes a sentence on the big board for the players to consider. Each team will decide whether they think the sentence is grammatically sound or flawed and then write a wager along with their answer. The wager should reflect how sure they are in their answers.

When every team has come to a conclusion, the teacher records their answers one by one as they each report their decisions aloud, making sure that all pencils are down. Once all the answers are recorded, the teacher gives the correct answer and has the students explain why. The scores on the big board are then adjusted according to the written wagers and answers and the next round begins with a new sentence.

You can play as many or as few rounds as sentences you wish to provide. Whichever team has the most play money at the end of the set number of rounds is declared the winner. Learning can be fun.
